Houses for poor: Dec 31 set as new deadline

Taking a serious note of delay in the construction of 1.01 lakh houses in the first phase of Manyawar Shree Kanshiramji Shahri Gareeb Awaas Yojna,the UP government has set a final deadline to complete these houses by December 31.

While announcing the ambitious scheme last year,the state government had fixed February 28,2009,as the deadline for the projects completion. But due to delay in getting possession of land and development of approach roads,construction of houses was started after November,about three months behind the schedule. Kanshiram Nagar,Maharajganj,Kushi Nagar,Siddarth Nagar etc were some districts where only half of the required land was available for starting construction by January.

On the request of construction agencies including development authorities and UP Housing and Development Board (UPHDB),deadline was revised again and again. The previous deadline was August 31.

According the reports received from these development agencies,only 81,918 houses were constructed by November 10. That means that 18,962 houses are yet to be completed. District Magistrates have been directed to allot the houses and give possession to allottees by the December 31, said Balvinder Kumar,Principal Secretary of Ambedkar Gram Vikas Department. Kumar issued the orders about new deadline for construction and allotment on Thursday. Kumar said before allotment of houses,it will be responsibility of district magistrates to check that houses were well equipped with basic services like water,supply and sewage systems. Locality must have roads,street light and drains.
