Hours after she ran away from her marriage, girl found dead with lover

Blood-soaked bodies found in Unnao, police have not ruled out honour killing.

Hours after she had reportedly eloped midway through her marriage ceremony,a 17-year-old girl and her lover were found shot near Kesrikheda village in Unnao Friday evening.

The police, while saying that prima facie it appears to be a case of a suicide pact, have not ruled out honour killing yet.

The couple has been identified as Rita and Mithilesh (22).

According to the police,Rajaram,a Class IV employee at Purwa sub-divisional magistrate’s office, was marrying off both his daughters on Thursday when,Rita, the younger daughter, could not be found early Friday morning to perform the remaining marriage rituals.

When they failed to trace her,Rita’s father lodged an FIR against Mithilesh, his father and his elder brother for kidnapping his daughter.

Later in the evening,blood-soaked bodies of Rita and Mithilesh were discovered near a pond on the village outskirts. Both had one gunshot each on their heads. A country-made pistol was also recovered from the site, the police informed.

Unnao SP Sonia Singh said while it looks like the two ended their lives in a suicide pact, the police will examine the postmortem report and other forensic evidence and the honour killing has not been ruled out.

She added the two had also eloped about six months ago but had returned, only to be told by the panchayat that they would have to end the relationship as they both belonged to the same clan.
