As political parties in UP gear up for the Lok Sabha elections, the Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court today ordered a stay on caste-based political rallies across the state with “immediate effect”.

It has also issued notices to the Centre, state government and four major political parties — the Congress,Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP),Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the Samajwadi Party (SP) — seeking their replies as to why such rallies should not be banned.

A Division Bench comprising Justices Uma Nath Singh and Mahendra Dayal issued the order on a PIL filed by a lawyer,Moti Lal Yadav, who argued his own PIL.

In his submission,Yadav said various political parties were organising rallies in the name of different castes like Brahmin,Kshatriya,Vaishya, etc.”

“Such cased-based rallies are dividing the society on caste lines and causing damage to social unity and harmony,” said Yadav.

He also submitted that political parties organising such caste-based rallies prefer to work only for the welfare of these castes after coming to power.

In the PIL,Yadav appealed to the court to order a ban on caste-based political rallies, debar those leaders who organise such rallies from contesting elections, and cancellation of recognition of the political parties which organise such rallies.
