Govt relaxes housing scheme conditions again

Not finding enough urban poor for allotment of houses under the Manyawar Kanshiram Shahri Gareeb Awas Yojna, the state government is once again going to relax the norms.

Not finding enough urban poor for allotment of houses under the Manyawar Kanshiram Shahri Gareeb Awas Yojna, the state government is once again going to relax the norms.

It is now proposed that every constituent family of a joint family will be considered as a single unit, eligible for allotment of a house free-of-cost. Also,an applicant will be considered as poor and eligible for allotment of a house even if he owns residential land in any rural area. “But the applicant should not own residential land in any urban local body area,” said Balvinder Kumar,Principal Secretary of Ambedkar Gram Vikas Vibhag.

The proposals have been sent to the chief minister’s office for approval.

“If there are three families living in a joint family in a common house and the share of each in the land they own in a slum does not exceed 33 square metre and they can produce the certificate of poverty, then they would be considered as three separate poor families and each would be eligible for allotment of a house,” said an official.

While announcing the scheme in 2008,the state government had decided to build 1.01 lakh houses annually. But in many districts there were not enough applicants.

In some districts land was also not available. Therefore, for 2009-10 the target was reduced to 57,000 houses. Yet, in many districts there were not enough who fulfilled the criteria laid down by the government.

Thereafter, the state government had removed the condition that the applicants should have a BPL card. Anyone who could produce a certificate showing that his income was less than the poverty standard was eligible to apply.
