Given ultimatum to UPTU,tech foundation tells govt

With the UP Technical University failing to begin the admission counselling, the Technical Institutions Foundation has written to the state government on Monday about the ultimatum it has given to the former.

With the UP Technical University (UPTU) failing to begin the admission counselling, the Technical Institutions Foundation (TIF) has written to the state government on Monday about the ultimatum it has given to the former.

The foundation,an association of over 400 private technical institutions, has stated that if the UPTU fails to start the admission counselling before Wednesday,it will go ahead with separate counselling for its member colleges.

The counselling was delayed by 10 days after a dispute between the state government and the unaided private colleges arose over the reservation of SCs,STs and other backward classes.

The state government had issued an order under the UP State Reservation Act,enforcing reservation for SC/ST and OBC candidates in all technical and management institutions. The unaided private colleges, however, refused to implement the quota, stating that the order cannot be forced on them as they do not take any monetary assistance from the state government.

After hearing a petition filed by the foundation, the Allahabad High Court had put a stay on the implementation of the government order. Thereafter, the UPTU filed an appeal in the Supreme Court. But the Court refused to lift the stay.

“On July 17,the Supreme Court provided the unaided professional colleges with the option to implement the quota system as per their choice,” said Dev Murti, president of TIF. “After receiving the order,we decided that over 400-unaided colleges (TIF members) will not implement the quota system,” added Murti.

“After taking the consent of all unaided colleges,I have written to the government as well as the UPTU to take a decision by Wednesday, otherwise we will start our own counselling,” said Murti. The schedule of the counselling will be finalised after the government takes a step.

The UPTU Registrar,US Tomer, said he had not received any letter from the foundation. The government will take a decision in a few days,he added.

According to UPTU’s academic calendar, the counselling should be completed by the first week of August. UPTU Vice-Chancellor Premvrat admitted that if the counselling is not organised as soon as possible, the academic session will get delayed.

According to Premvrat, once the state government takes a decision,a meeting of the Central Admission Board will be called to finalise the schedule of the counselling.

The UPTU had originally scheduled the counselling for July 10,but had postponed it in view of the pending appeal in the Supreme Court.
