As India’s first national DeepTech conference – DeepTech Bharat 2025 – was inaugurated at IIT-Kanpur on Wednesday, the UP government unveiled its ‘DeepTech Policy 2035’, aimed at making the state the first to become deep-tech ready.

The conference, which focuses on Artificial Intelligence (AI), semiconductors, quantum technology, space technology, and biosciences, saw participation from Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, and over 200 venture capital firms, an official statement said.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who was at IIT-Kanpur to attend the “Samanvay”  industry-academia engagement programme, said Uttar Pradesh “will lead the country in DeepTech”.

Highlighting the event’s theme of “coordination,” the chief minister said that stronger collaboration between industry and academia would accelerate research and translate technological advances into everyday benefits.

“Industry-academia collaboration today is linked to solving global challenges and building a Viksit and Atmanirbhar Bharat,” he said, noting that discussions on AI, cyber security, and sustainability would directly improve citizens’ quality of life.

The chief minister said that IIT-Kanpur will be developed as the “main centre for deep-tech innovation”.

“The initiative will also focus on boosting startups and preparing the youth for global technological competition to make Uttar Pradesh a leader in the technological revolution. Collaborations with institutions like DRDO and ISRO should be used for this purpose,” he said.

Under the ‘DeepTech Policy 2035’, the government will extend opportunities to startups and youths from the Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities.

Stating that the significance of the summit is to make “Deep Tech Bharat 2025” a success, the chief minister said that IIT-Kanpur should lead the effort. He said that the state government has already allotted land for this project in the Gautam Buddha Nagar district.

Praising IIT-Kanpur’s role in technology over the past six decades, Adityanath sought the institute’s support in strengthening cybersecurity, pointing out that Uttar Pradesh now has cyber police stations in all 75 districts and a State Cyber and Forensic Institute.

Tracing India’s economic arc, the chief minister said that recent reforms have helped the country recover lost ground on the global stage, from contributing 25 percent of world GDP until the 17th century to a low of 2 percent in 1947, and he expressed confidence that India, aided by technological leadership, could rise further in the coming years.
