Police arrested a former MP and his brother for allegedly grabbing a village panchayat land in the Cantonment area of Varanasi on Thursday.

The accused,Jawahar Jaiswal,was earlier elected MP on a Samajwadi Party ticket. He,however,lost the last Lok Sabha election from Chandauli wher he contested as a BJP candidate.

SP Varanasi (City) Vijay Bhushan said the matter came to light while probing the deaths of 17 persons who died affter consuming spurious liquor at Shoebpur village in the Cantonment area on February 17. He said the probe revealed that about half-a-dozen families hit by the spurious liquor lived on a 2.5 acre land owned by Jaiswal and his brother Vijay. It also came to light that Jaiswals had got the particular land transferred in their names by using forged documents,he said. On March 5,lan FIR was filed against Jaiswals. After collecting concrete evidence,the police today raided Jaiswals’ residence at Ardali Bazar locality and arrested them,he said.
