Distillery worker found hanging

The Body of a 53-year-old employee of a distillery in Pilibhit district was found hanging in the time-keeping office of the unit on Wednesday.

The Body of a 53-year-old employee of a distillery in Pilibhit district was found hanging in the time-keeping office of the unit on Wednesday. He was employed as a time-keeper in the Majhola Distillery & Chemical Works.

Later,a group of employees staged a demonstration at the distillery gate demanding to register a case of murder in the death of their colleague,Shripat Mandal.

The Pilibhit Superintendent of Police (SP),Prem Kumar Gautam said,“The incident appears to be of a suicide, but we are waiting for the postmortem report.”

The SP added that the distillery remains closed for most part of the year and the matter over the unit’s fate is probably pending with the government.

However, the Circle Officer (CO),City,Rafiq Ahmed, told The Indian Express that the circumstantial evidence indicates foul play. He said no suicide note has been recovered.

Ahmed said Mandal was associated with the unit for over 30 years. The unit is closed these days, but 60 of the confirmed workers still come to the job. Mandal’s family comprises his wife, two daughters and a son who stay in the quarters on the distillery premises.

Mandal had left home last night stating that he was going to attend the duty. A guard of the factory spotted Mandal’s body hanging in the time office and informed the police.

Mandal’s nephew,Vinod, said that his uncle and other employees were not getting salary for several months. But,he said, his uncle did not face financial crunch as one of his (Mandal’s) daughters and the son were employed and were earning. The suicide theory was baseless and there was a foul play behind his uncle’s death,Vinod alleged.

The Pilibhit District Magistrate,Kaushal Raj Sharma, told The Indian Express that the distillery is part of the Majhola Sugar Mill which is a co-operative unit under the supervision of UP Sugar Federation. The mill has not paid its dues to the Trade Tax Department for last eight years.

The distillery is making losses for last several years and is unable to pay the dues of the retired employees.
