A senior police officer has been caught on video suggesting honour killing to a man seeking his help in tracing his missing daughter.
Saharanpur DIG Satish Kumar Mathur reportedly told the man that if his own sister eloped,he would kill her or commit suicide. The video was shot by a local journalist.
The DIG denied having made any such statement.
The state government has directed Meerut IG Jawahar Lal Tripathi to conduct an inquiry and submit a report, said Additional Director General (Law and Order) Jagmohan Yadav. Whatever comment was made was wrong and he would not defend it,Yadav added.
On Tuesday,Mathur had gone to Prabudha Nagar district for inspection. Shaukeen Mohammad,a resident of Kaserwa village, met him and requested him to ask policemen to trace his missing daughter. He believed that his daughter had been abducted and lodged a report.
The DIG told him,I dont have magical powers to recover your daughter. But if your daughter has eloped, then you should be ashamed of it and end your life.
He added,I would have killed my sister if she had eloped or else I would have committed suicide.
The incident was caught on video camera as some local mediapersons were present there to cover his visit.
