Custodial death: Case against 5 cops

A case of murder was registered against the station officer and four other policemen for allegedly torturing a man in custody at Kheri police station in Lakhimpur Kheri district on Monday.

A case of murder was registered against the station officer and four other policemen for allegedly torturing a man in custody at Kheri police station in Lakhimpur Kheri district on Monday. The policemen have been placed under suspension.

Lucknow zone IG Subhash Chandra said that they were waiting for the post-mortem report to know the exact cause of death.

Lakhimpur Kheri SP Rajendra Singh said that the police had admitted Bhagwani (51) at the district hospital when his condition deteriorated at the police station on Monday morning. The records at the emergency section of the hospital showed that the police said the man was suffering from dehydration,he said.

He added that Kheri police station SO Shivajeet Singh had arrested Bhagwani and his son Lalji following complaint of a fight with his brother Sitaram at Loniyanpurwa village on Sunday night. Bhagwani’s condition deteriorated on Monday morning inside the police lock-up and he was rushed to the hospital. He died during treatment after an hour.

His son Lalji,who was in the same lock-up,lodged a complaint alleging that the SO and four other policemen had tortured his father,causing him serious injuries. He fell unconscious and died at the hospital,he alleged.

The SP said that a case of murder and illegal detention has been registered against the SO and other policemen and they will be arrested if the post-mortem report confirmed ante-mortem injury as the cause of Bhagwani’s death.
