In protest against Friday prayers at a particular site,a group of locals in Faizganj Behat of Budaun attacked policemen and set afire two of their vehicles.

“The locals objected over a section of a community offering prayers at a spot in Mudiya Dureki village,” said Budaun SSP Dr N Ravinder. “Since prayers are being offered there for the last four years, the police refused to meet their demand.”

The violence began after the worshippers had left the spot. “The locals attacked the cops and left over six policemen seriously injured,” said Ravinder.

“They launched an unprovoked attack on the Station Officer of Faizganj and the other policemen. They also opened fire with illegal weapons and set afire two police motorcycles,” said Budaun Additional SP (Rural) KK Pushkar.

Additional police forces had to rush to the spot. “The police had to break open the doors,as the residents did not respond to the repeated knocking,” Pushkar said. The policemen also opened fire in air and caught over a dozen suspects.

A case under various sections of the IPC for rioting, indulging in violence, attempt to murder and assaulting policemen on duty was registered against unidentified residents.
