Sitapur MP Rakesh Rathore arrested in rape case, sent to judicial remand

Congress' Sitapur MP Rakesh RathoreSitapur MP Rakesh Rathore was arrested on Thursday in connection with an FIR lodged by a 35-year-old woman accusing him of sexually exploiting her, police said.
The Congress MP, who remained “untraceable” for nearly two weeks after the case was registered against him on January 17, was produced in a court which sent him to 14 days judicial remand, Circle Officer (Sitapur City) Aman Singh said.
He has been sent to jail, it is learnt.
Singh said Rathore was apprehended from his residence in the city around noon when he was talking to some mediapersons.
The police had procured a non-bailable warrant from the court against Rathore on Monday after he did not appear for recording his statement despite being served notice at his residence, directing him to present himself by January 23.
The police claimed to have visited the MP’s house multiple times, but did not find him.
In the FIR, the woman alleged that the MP subjected her to sexual assaults over the past four years while promising to marry her and advance her political career to keep her silent.
The case was registered under Sections 64 (rape), 351 (3) (criminal intimidation) and 127 (2) (wrongful confinement) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
The victim’s medical examination has been conducted, and her statement was recorded before a magistrate. She has also submitted purported electronic evidence, including call recordings between her and the MP, to support her claims, the police said. A member of the State Women Commission had also met with the victim to record her statement.
Recently, the MP’s wife, Neel Kamal Rathore, appeared in a video claiming that her husband was innocent and was being falsely implicated.
