To expose the wrongdoings of the state government, the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee will launch a statewide protest — “Maya Hatao,Samvidhan Bachao” — on September 16 and 17. The decision was taken after a meeting of the presidents of the district/city Congress committees in Lucknow on Saturday.

The Congress workers plan to stage a dharna at every district headquarters across the state on one of the stipulated dates. Talking to mediapersons, the state Congress chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi said the leaders of the party’s district/city units are in favour of demanding the dismissal of the Maya government.

“We will discuss the issue with all the MPs and MLAs of our party before voicing our demand,” she said. “UP has got a government with full majority after a long gap. But the situation has changed now. The state government shows little respect to constitutional norms,” she added.

In the meeting, the party passed 9 resolutions. The party leaders criticised the state government for spending huge money on the construction of memorials. According to party workers, the state government has lost its right to rule over the state after violating the Supreme Court orders. They also welcomed the apex court’s decision to stop the construction work.

The party workers,in the meeting, urged to renew its demand for the CBI probe into the arson on Joshi’s house in Lucknow. The party blamed the state government for rewarding those who were allegedly involved in the incident. The party has also identified the issue of land acquisition across the state. The UPCC plans to protest the move of the state government to acquire the farmers’ land and organise a “Kisan Rally” in every division of the state.

The party, meanwhile, has worked out a strategy to expose the corruption level in the implementation of the NREGS across the state.

Joshi underlined the need to ensure transparency in the implementation of NREGS across the state. She has directed the party workers to hold “chaupals” in every block before the “NREGS Diwas”.

Interestingly, the government has introduced the NREGS Diwas, which will be held on first Wednesday of every month at tehsil headquarters. The Congress workers will help the villagers to obtain job cards and receive timely payments through NREGS. “The party wants to counter the ruling BSP’s move to get political mileage out of the Centrally-sponsored NRGES. Under this scheme,an individual is guaranteed 100-days work. If anyone fails to get it,he or she can demand for unemployment allowance,” a source in the Congress said.
