The Lucknow CBI court acquitted jailed don Om Prakash Srivastava alias Babloo Srivastava on Monday in connection to three separate cases lodged against him in 1999.

Srivastava was accused of operating his gang by using cellphone from the jail premises. Following directives by the Allahabad High court, the case was handed over to the CBI. The agency had lodged five separate cases involving the gangster, his associates and a few of the key jail staff. While the court has given verdict in three of the cases, two are still on trial.

“The CBI had chargesh-eeted Babloo for the cases and the prosecutor had produced 20 witnesses. But none of them could give convincing evidences corroborating the offence,” said Babloo’s lawyer H A Alvi.

On February 1,1999,advocate Sheetla Prasad Mishra had filed a writ petition before the Allahabad High Court alleging that Srivastava was using mobile phone inside the jail and orchestrating kidnapping and extortion rackets. The petitioner also had accused the jail staff of providing him several facilities.
