The Aligarh Muslim University today suspended 38 students for their alleged involvement in the clash and firng on campus on April 29.
University vice-chancellor Professor P K Abdul Azis ordered the suspension of the students, from various courses, from the rolls with immediate effect pending inquiry.
According to varsity authorities, the disciplinary action was taken in view of the facts and circumstances prima facie established in the ongoing inquiry conducted by the university administration. The university was closed sine die on April 30 following the clash and firing on campus.
AMU spokesperson Rahat Abrar said: In the preliminary inquiry, the university found that these students were involved in the group clash and firing that led to closure of the university. As these 38 students have been suspended, they cannot attend classes or take examinations.
The varsity is scheduled to reopen on May 13. The administration had earlier decided on May 16,but senior authorities decided to advance the date. The decision was taken to give students sufficient time to prepare for examinations.
Hostel facilities will be available to final-year students of BTech and all other faculties from May 13 and examinations for these courses will begin on May 18.
AMU Teachers Association (AMUTA) office-bearers,however,are continuing their dharna on the campus which began last week. We are continuing our dharna because the university has announced the reopening of campus from May 13 but it has not made any official notification in this regard. Our second demand of the vice-chancellors resignation has not been met yet, said Professor Abdul Qaiyum,AMUTA president.
The AMUTA executive will hold a meeting on Wednesday to decide whether we should participate in the examination process or boycott it.
The vice-chancellor has appealed to AMUTA to extend full cooperation to bring normalcy on campus. The university has promptly addressed the pertinent issues raised by AMUTA regarding the preponement of reopening of the university so that students can prepare for examinations without any constraints, said the vice- chancellor in a statement.
