State seeks withdrawal of case against ex-MP

LUCKNOW: The UP government has moved an application in a Barabanki court seeking withdrawal of a case in which former SP MP Ram Sagar Rawat was sent in judicial custody after he surrendered before court on July 29. Rawat,along with others,including his son,Ram Magan Rawat who is sitting MLA from Haidergarh in Barabanki,was booked for allegedly burning the effigy of former chief minister Mayawati during a protest in Asandara area in 2008. Prosecuting officer Manmeet Suri said the application has been filed in the court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Humayun Rasheed Khan. The court will hear the application on August 14.

Couple killed for resisting robbery

Lucknow: A businessman and his wife were killed and their two sons injured Friday when they resisted a robbery attempt by a group of armed men at their residence in Bindki area of Fatehpur district,police said. Around seven armed miscreants barged into the house of rice mill owner Ganga Prasad (80) in the morning and attacked him and his family members with knives and sticks. Police said while Ganga Prasad died on the spot,his wife Somwati (75) succumbed during treatment. The assailants escaped with cash and jewellery.

Kanwariyas torch vehicles on NH-2

ALLAHABAD: a group of kanwariyas went on the rampage Friday on National Highway No. 2 of Varanasi district after they were stopped from playing music in their vehicle. Kanwariyas torched half a dozen vehicles,including the official jeep of the Circle Officer of Dashashwamedha.
