Blast at Agra bakery leaves 13 workers injured, 2 critical
Employees say one of large ovens running on LPG and electricity exploded because of high pressure

A blast at a bakery unit in Agra city left at least 13 of its employees hospitalised with burn injuries on Thursday afternoon. The condition of the two is said to be critical. According to police, the blast took place in a 10-foot-tall oven at the bakery located in Transport Nagar area of Agra.
Local Station House Officer (SHO) Alok Kumar Singh said that after being informed of the blast, a police team reached the spot and rushed the victims to the hospital by 2 pm.
“The blast was so powerful that not only clothes, the victims’ skin got burnt,” said Arjun Kumar, a staff member of the bakery.
According to him, 45 people work in the bakery unit in two shifts.
“There are three huge ovens which run on LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) and electricity. One of these exploded because of high pressure. We had requested the bakery owner, Shikha Sharma, to replace the ovens which are in dilapidated conditions, but to no avail,” Kumar said, adding all the employees hail from Etah district.
Jitendra Chaudhary, the manager of the bakery unit, however, said new ovens were installed. “The blast could have occurred due to a technical glitch,” he added.
Meanwhile, the family members of the victims accused the police and the bakery management of apathy.
