BJP MP put under house arrest,Apna Dal MLA detained

The UP Public Service Commission had scrapped its reservation policy whereby caste-based quotas were introduced in competitive examinations at the preliminary stage itself.

Uttar Pradeh Police Sunday placed a BJP MP under house arrest and detained an Apna Dal MLA who wanted to attend a Mahapanchayat called by backward Kurmi community in Azamgarh to raise demand of three tier reservation system in Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission,which was scrapped in July.

BJP MP from Azamgarh,Ramakant Yadav,was placed under house,Superintendent of Police Arvind Sen said.

Yadav was later shifted to an undisclosed location,sources said,adding the MP’s presence during the mahapanchayat at Mehta park in the district could have led to a law and order problem.

Following the incident,pro-reservation supporters raised slogans and held a protest,which led to detention of 50 people,the police official said. In the wake of mahapanchayat,security measures were put in place in and around Mehta park,the official said.

In a related development,Apna Dal president and MLA Anuriya Patel was detained in Faizabad along with hundreds of her supporters when was on way to Azamgarh to attend the Mahapanchayat.

SP (City) Faizabad,R S Gautam said that Patel was detained as a precaution and was released in the evening. She was kept at government guesthouse here during her detention,he said.

On her arrest,Patel said,“Samajwadi Party,which has come to power with the support of backward classes,is now stepping back when it is time to empower these communities.”

In July this year,the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission had scrapped its reservation policy whereby caste-based quotas were introduced in competitive examinations at the preliminary stage itself. The decision came after violent agitations by students of the general category.
