“Humein mili hai maut,” was Amar Singh’s refrain at a rally here today, referring to the plight of those from Poorvanchal across the country. But clearly evident in this rhetoric was the attack on his former party chief.

While Singh “apologised to Mayawati for the sins he committed by snatching BSP MLAs to run the Mulayam Singh Yadav government”,he attributed these “sins” to the SP president.

“It was his voice,I only gave lips. I spoke, acted at his behest. If I want,I can break many MLAs,MPs of SP in a day but I will get nothing. Mayawati doesn’t need MLAs,they will become my liability,” he later told The Indian Express as the Poorvanchal Swabhiman Padyatra he launched on December 1 ended today in Gorakhpur.

“You may ask why I am confessing and taking up the Poorvanchal demand now,but for 14 years I only saw dance (of girls) in Saifai…Saanp ko doodh pilaoge to katega hi (feed the snake and it will bite),” said the man once considered Mulayam’s most trusted.

Claiming that the SP was “finished” and that he had received the support of thousands of Yadavs during his padyatra,he said: “Mulayam has become a persona non grata in Etawah. People are tired of him.” As Singh’s apology list included Mayaw-ati,“Soniaji and Advaniji for the impolite language I used for them” (he personally wrote a letter to the BJP leader,he claimed),he threw open all doors for his political future.

“Nothing is final now. Everything can be done, provided the people of Poorvanchal support it,” he added, refusing to disclose the programme of Lok Manch,an outfit he floated after he was expelled from the SP.

He admitted: “I wrote letters to Soniaji,Rahul,Ajit Singh,Mayawati to join me in the rally, but no one came forward.” Flanked by Jayaprada and Sanjay Dutt,he denied that they were the main draw. But half of the fleet of four dozen buses that had ferried people to the rally venue had begun to leave after Dutt finished his four-minute address. This prompted the next speaker to tell the crowd: “Aapko Poorvanchal ki kasam, abhi na jaiye.” But few listened.

Talk to locals who attended the rally, even those at railway stations in Poorvanchal,in Gonda and Basti and you can sense the first signs of support for a separate state. It’s this that Singh wants to tap into. “When Mamata took up the Singur demand, everyone derided her. But see where she is today,” he said.
