There seems to be no end to people queuing up in front of Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee’s residence-cum-office at Kalighat, desperately seeking a job with the Railways.

Jagannath Dey,a contract worker of the Railways, reached Banerjee’s house with his family on Thursday morning and created quite a scene, pleading desperately for a job.

Dey’s father was a commission agent of the Bagori Halt Station in West Midnapore from 1975 and later,Dey got the same post from 1996. Commission agents are not paid railway employees ¿ they are hired on contract basis and are supposed to get 12 per cent of the amount of tickets sold from that station.

According to Dey,he has been sent a letter by the Railways, which said his contract will not be renewed and he will be replaced by someone else.

“I had came here to appeal to Didi to look into the matter,” said Dey,who had come from his home at Garbeta with his wife Uma and son Mansa. “If I lose the job, what will we do? I will have no other way but to commit suicide.”

According to Dey,this is not the first time he was visiting Kalighat with the appeal. He has repeatedly visited the Railway minister’s office since 2009. “Every time they have turned a deaf ear to me,telling me to submit a written application at the office and leave,” said Dey,who claims he is a Trinamool worker in his locality.

After Dey started crying and banging his head against the wall in front of Banerjee’s office,he and his family were taken to a separate room by Sanku Panda, president,Trinamool Congress Chatra Parishad, the party’s student wing. After some discussion, the family left for the Howrah station, escorted by partymen.

“This is nothing but a gameplan of the CPM to divert people’s attention from the ongoing violence in the state,it was completely staged by them,” said Panda. “People should understand Mamata Banerjee cannot give jobs like that — there is a due legal procedure for it. We are sympathetic towards Dey’s cause but there is a way of everything ¿ one just cannot barge in and create a scene in front of the railway minister’s house, taking advantage of the fact that her doors are always open for all.”
