The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the George Washington University Law School,US,to facilitate student and faculty exchange programmes,which would focus mainly on Islamic law.
AMU Vice-Chancellor Professor P K Abdul Azis said: Since AMU has the best faculty for Islamic law,the George Washington University Law School had shown interest in signing an MoU with us. This will enable our teachers to visit their campus for teaching this particular subject.
According to university authorities,the primary area of research and teaching would be laws associated with Islam Islamic family law,Islamic banking law,Islamic criminal justice system,Islamic property law,Islamic business and transaction law and Islamic commercial law.
The other subjects which are to be covered are constitutional law,environmental law and comparative law.
Last year,Professor Azis had visited various foreign universities including George Washington University Law School,US,where Old Boys Association of AMU had mooted the idea of this MoU.
After passing LLB or LLM,students in our country face various problems in selecting a good institute in the US for undertaking research programmes, Professor Mohd Shabbir,Dean of Law Faculty,AMU.
After this MoU,George Washington University Law School will now give admissions to AMU students without any difficulty, added Professor Shabbir.
According to him,the collaboration would be in areas like admissions,teaching,research and student and faculty exchange programmes.
The university has the profile of all our teachers and whenever they ask for anyone,AMU will relieve the teacher so that the concerned person can teach in that university for a few semesters, Professor Shabbir said.
According to AMU V-C,the university has signed an MoU with one of the worlds leading higher educational institutes in law,with substantial expertise in administrative law,public interest law,international and comparative law,environmental law and intellectual property law.

University,said the MoU envisaged a broad range of activities including conferences,students scholarships,visiting fellows,lecture series,exchange programmes and other areas of common interest between AMU and George Washington University.
AMU is in the process of signing similar MoUs with a number of universities based in Australia,Iran and UK, said Professor Azis.
