The alumni of the medical university of Lucknow are once again demanding the restoration of the name King George Medical College (KGMC) to the Lucknow campus of Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University (CSMMU).
The KGMC,which admitted its first batch of students in 1911,is celebrating 100 years of establishment this year.
During the international alumni meet on the occasion of centenary foundation year celebration of KGMC,the International Association of KGMU Alumni,is planning to pass a resolution and send it to the state government, urging it to keep the name of Lucknow campus of CSMMU as KGMC.
As of now,Motilal Nehru Medical College,Allahabad is also affiliated with CSMMU and the state government is planning to affiliate all the medical colleges of the state to the university. The Georgians fear that with all the colleges affiliated to the university, the name of KGMC will be forever lost.
We have no problem with the university being called Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University. All we want is that the Lucknow campus of the university be called King George Medical College, which will function under the umbrella of CSMMU,like various other medical colleges of the state, said Dr SD Pandey, president of the association .
Many Georgians want the name of KGMC retained and have already written to the state government regarding this. We are planning to send a joint letter to the government after the meet, he told reporters in Lucknow today. He also said that in the general body meeting of the association,a resolution will be passed, urging the government to take necessary steps in this direction.
The name KGMC is recognised in other countries but CSMMU is not that widely known, for which it becomes difficult for the university graduates to get a registration and license for medical practice in other countries like the US, said Dr Sharad Lakhanpal,a 1969-batch alumnus of KGMC,who is a clinical professor of Internal Medicine,University of Texas, and a medical specialist with Americal Board of Internal Medicine and Rheumatology.
