SP chief Akhilesh Yadav (PTI Photo) The tension between the Congress and Samajwadi Party (SP) in Uttar Pradesh over the botched alliance talks in Madhya Pradesh seems to be turning intense with each passing day with a Congress MLA in Uttar Pradesh now flaying SP chief Akhilesh Yadav over his “ghamand (arrogance)”, “galat samajh (misunderstanding)” and praying for his “sadbudhi (wisdom)”.
On Thursday, Akhilesh slammed UP Congress chief Ajay Rai when the latter asked SP to withdraw from the fray in Madhya Pradesh as the party had no base there. Rai also asked the SP to support the Congress as an INDIA bloc partner. Following this, Akhilesh criticised Rai saying he had no ‘haisiyat (status)’. “He was not there at the meeting (of INDIA) in Patna or Mumbai. What does he know about the INDIA alliance,” the SP chief said, adding that “Congress should not get statements made by their ‘chirkut (small-time)’ leaders about our party.”
Congress leaders have since come out in support of Rai, and in turn have questioned Akhilesh’s status and treatment of leaders, including state president Naresh Uttam, within his own party. Virendra Chaudhary, Congress MLA from Pharendra, took to X to school Akhilesh about his “misunderstanding”.

“Please do not take it otherwise but I want to tell you that the power of every state president in Congress is that every state president is directly responsible after the national president of the party,” Chaudhary posted, claiming that for 100 years the Congress has been working in service of the country’s people as well as that of various provinces through a decentralised democracy.
Praying that Akhilesh is given “wisdom” by God, Chaudhary also said that the Kurmis (section of OBCs) in Uttar Pradesh are aware of how SP state president Naresh Uttam Patel is treated within the party. He further alleged that the SP chief spoke in this manner about another party’s state president because he was comparing the situation to what was happening in his own party.
“Humein malum hai ki aapke yahan mamla jara dusara hai. Pura Pradesh aur Kurmi Samaj janta hai ki aapki party mein Naresh Uttam ji ki kya haisiyat hai. Shayad yahi aapki galat samajh ka karan bhi hai. (I know that things are a little different in your party. The entire state and the Kurmi community know the status of Naresh Uttam in your party. Perhaps, this is the reason for your misunderstanding),” wrote Chaudhary.
“Apne netaon ko jaise aap treat karte hain, sochte honge sab vaise hi karte honge (The way you treat your leaders, you must be thinking that everyone treats their leaders in a similar manner),” he went on, adding, “It is unfortunate that your ghamand (pride) is not even allowing you to open your eyes. May God bless you with sadbudhi (wisdom).”
Though there have been differences between the two parties earlier, so far Congress leaders in Uttar Pradesh have avoided any direct attack on SP chief Akhilesh Yadav.
The fissures between the two allies came out in the open on Sunday, when the Congress announced candidates for four of the seven seats in Madhya Pradesh, where the SP had already declared candidates. In a strong signal to its INDIA ally, the SP then declared a list of nine candidates. On Wednesday, Akhilesh’s party released a list of 22 more candidates.
