Ahmedabad has the third highest number of corporate employees afflicted with life-style diseases after Delhi and Mumbai,an Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) survey of over 1000 such workers in several Indian cities suggests.
Due to lack of preventive healthcare schemes,52 per cent of corporate employees are afflicted (with) life-style diseases especially of eating habits while 24 per cent suffer from chronic diseases and 18 per cent have acute ailment, a report of the survey said,adding Delhi ranks first followed by Mumbai,Ahmedabad, Chandigarh,Hyderabad,Pune and Chennai,in that order.
The survey was able to target corporate employees from 18 broad sectors,with maximum share contributed by employees from IT/ITes sector (17 per cent), the report said.
Only 6 per cent of the average corporate employees claim not to suffer from any disease, it said,adding around 55 per cent of the respondents fall under the age bracket of 20-29 years,followed by 30-39 years (26 per cent),40-49 years (16 per cent),50-59 years (2 per cent) and 60-69 years (nearly 1 per cent).
ASSOCHAM Secretary General D S Rawat said 26 per cent of corporate employees suffer from obesity,and 18 per cent from depression.
The other diseases which afflict the corporate employees the most are high blood pressure (12 per cent),diabetes (10 per cent),spondylosis (8 per cent),heart disease (6 per cent),cervical (5 per cent),asthma (4 per cent),slip disk (3 per cent) and arthritis (2.5 per cent).
The report says that the increasingly demanding schedules and high stress levels are leading to sleep disorders in individual lives,leading to daytime fatigue,physical discomfort,psychological stress,performance deterioration,low pain threshold and increased absenteeism.
It was interesting to note that employees in spite of suffering with an ailment (like influenza,fever,backache,etc) consider themselves healthy as they are able to pull themselves to work without adversely impacting productivity, the report also noted.
As per the report,57 per cent of the respondents feel they enjoy good health. Only 4 per cent felt they have’ poor health conditions. The report results find that nearly 36 per cent of the corporate employees sleep less than 6 hours,on a daily basis.
ASSOCHAM healthcare report also reveals that 38 per cent of employees spend between Rs 500-5000 on healthcare in a financial year,while 18 per cent of the employees health expenditure ranged between Rs 5000-50000 as they suffered from diabetes,acute liver disease,kidney disease,high blood pressure and stroke.
