Accused gets life

A Lucknow court on Saturday sentenced to life Bhagwati Singh,the prime accused in the Syed Modi murder case in which the eight-time national badminton champion was shot dead near KD Singh ‘Babu’ Stadium in Lucknow in 1988.

A fine of Rs 50,000 was also imposed on Singh,a resident of Rae Bareli.

“We will file appeal against this judgment in the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court,” said defence lawyer Piyush Asthana.

The court handed out life term and imposed fine of Rs 40,000 on the charges of murder.

Five years imprisonment and fine Rs 10,000 was imposed under the Arms Act.

The prosecution had argued for a death sentence for Singh.

According to prosecution,Modi was shot dead by two men around 7 pm on July 28,1988,when he came out of the stadium after his daily practice and was about to start his scooter. He was rushed to hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

The CBI,which investigated the case,filed chargesheet against seven persons. The charges,however,were framed only against two persons – Bhagwati Singh and Jitendra Singh. Three persons were discharged and two had died later.

On Wednesday,Additional Session Judge Shashank Shekhar had held Bhagwati Singh guilty and gave the benefit of the doubt to Jitendra Singh.
