Six members of a family, including three children and three women, were killed and two others sustained injuries after their Alto car allegedly collided head-on with a vegetable-laden pickup truck on an unopened stretch of the Ganga Expressway in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal Thursday evening, the police said. The two injured people are currently in hospital in a critical condition.

The police said the deceased belonged to a family from Adampur town in Amroha district. They were returning home after attending a child’s naming ceremony in Bisaru village in the Bahjoi police station area. Rohit Khadgawanshi, 36, who was driving the car, survived the accident with injuries, along with his younger son Jai.

The deceased were identified as Rohit’s wife Renu, 35, daughter Riya, 10, son Bhaskar, 7, sister-in-law Geeta, 28, sister Devvati, 46, and nephew Kapil, 12. The accident was so severe that the front of the truck was completely crushed, and the Alto was almost flattened, the police said.

Officers said the accident took place around 7 pm near Rasulpur Dhatra village in the Hayatnagar police station limits. Both vehicles were travelling in the same lane, which was the only functional lane on this section, as the parallel lane of the expressway remains closed. The expressway, which will eventually connect Meerut to Prayagraj, is yet to be inaugurated.

According to officials, the pickup truck was carrying vegetables that were later found scattered on the road.

On receiving a call from the Police Control Room (PCR), Kailadevi Station House Officer (SHO) Saurabh Tyagi, Inspector Umesh Solanki, and Additional Superintendent of Police (North) Kuldeep Singh reached the spot. The injured were taken to local hospitals while the bodies were sent for post-mortem.

ASP Singh told The Indian Express, “Judging by the condition of the vehicles, it appears both were moving at a high speed. The car had three women, four children, and a man. Four died on the spot. The pickup’s driver and conductor were also injured.”
