3 weeks later,Jats call off agitation

The Jat leaders on Saturday decided to suspend their countrywide agitation and hold a mahapanchayat at Kafurpur in Jyotiba Phule Nagar district on Sunday to discuss the future strategy.

The Jat leaders on Saturday decided to suspend their countrywide agitation and hold a mahapanchayat at Kafurpur in Jyotiba Phule Nagar district on Sunday to discuss the future strategy. The community’s agitation for reservation in government jobs under OBC quota was going on for last 20 days and the Jat leaders had earlier announced to seal the Delhi borders by blocking railway routes and highways to disrupt the supply of essential commodities from March 28 onwards.

Uttar Pradesh Principal Secretary (Home) Kunwar Fateh Bahadur and DGP Karamvir Singh had attended a meeting with the Union Home Secretary in Delhi on Saturday to discuss over the plan to deal with the Jat agitation.

The president of the Akhil Bhartiya Jat Aarakshan Sangharsh Samiti (ABJASS),Yashpal Mallik,on Saturday told The Sunday Express,“We decided today to suspend the agitation and wait for the promises made by the Central government to us to meet our demands. A mahapanchayat has been called at Kafurpur tomorrow where the members of the Jat community and the leaders from the states including Uttar Pradesh,Rajasthan,Jammu & Kashmir,Punjab,Haryana,Delhi and Uttarakhand would take part.”

He said,“The details of the meetings with the Central government and the Haryana government held during last 20 days would be shared in the mahapanchayat. They (leaders) would discuss over the strategy about getting the demand fulfilled.”

Mallik also said the decision over the agitation would be taken during the mahapanchayat only.

After the meeting,the Jat leaders would also decide on the dispersal of the community members at a college in Kafurpur area.
