At least 20 mosques and madrasas located within the 15-km radius of the India-Nepal border in Uttar Pradesh have been demolished as part of a campaign to remove encroachments from government land, officials said.

In a press statement issued on Sunday, the state government said hundreds of encroachments were removed in the border areas of Bahraich, Shravasti, Siddharthnagar, Maharajganj, Balrampur and Lakhimpur Kheri districts under Section 67 of the Revenue Code.

In Shravasti district, action was taken against 17 unrecognised madrasas — 10 in Bhinga tehsil and seven in Jamunha tehsil, the statement read.

In Naugarh tehsil of Siddharthnagar district, five structures, including a mosque and a madrasa, constructed on government land were removed. Illegal constructions were also identified at six locations in Shohratgarh tehsil of the district, it added.

In Palia tehsil of Lakhimpur Kheri district, a mosque being built illegally was demolished at Krishna Nagar Colony, it was claimed, adding that prayers were being offered at the site.

In Nanpara tehsil of Bahraich, 227 encroachments were identified near the India-Nepal border, the statement said. While 63 of the encroachments were removed earlier, 26 were cleared between April 25 and 27, taking the total to 89, it was claimed. But no religious or educational structures were found at any of these encroached sites, the officials said.

In Maharajganj district, encroachments were identified in Farenda, Nautanwa and Nichlaul tehsils. While one case remains pending in court, eviction and demolition proceedings are underway in the rest, the government said in its statement.
