Two people, including a minor, were electrocuted and around three dozen others sustained burn injuries in Uttar Pradesh’s Amroha district when a Tazia they were carrying as part of a Muharram procession came in contact with a 400 kV power transmission line Saturday afternoon. The district magistrate has ordered a probe to ascertain how a Tazia of prohibited height was allowed to be taken out.

The deceased have been identified as Owais, 12, and Shane Mohammad, 35. They were killed on the spot. Those injured were rushed to district hospitals in Amroha and Moradabad. Amroha District Magistrate Rajesh Kumar Tyagi said the injured were rushed to hospitals in ten ambulances. “Around 28 of them were released after primary medical treatment. The condition of three others was critical and they were sent to a hospital in Delhi,” he informed.

The police said that around 500 persons from Patehi Khas village had assembled to take out the procession and they had hardly gone a kilometre from the village when the 35-foot-high Tazia – a replica of the mausoleum of Imam Hussain – touched the high-voltage transmission line.

The district magistrate said Amroha police authorities had held several meetings and informed local villagers that the government has prohibited Tazias or Kanwars that are over 12-foot high. “I have ordered an inquiry to look into how the Tazia of prohibited height was taken out in the procession,” DM Tyagi said.

S P Singh, executive engineer (transmission) at Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited, Moradabad, said, “The 400 kW transmission line is maintained by the Power Corporation of India which supplies electricity to a sub-station in Moradabad.”

On July 15, six persons including three minors were electrocuted and around a dozen others sustained burn injuries when a 28-foot-high Kanwar grazed a high-tension transmission line in Meerut’s Raali Chauhan village.
