Mamata accepts SC order, gives a Ramzan twist

Says Muslim voters will find it difficult to vote during fasting.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday grudgingly “accepted” the Supreme Court ruling on holding the panchayat elections in five phases and added that the polls during the Muslim holy month of Ramzan would pose problems for the community.

“We wanted the elections to be held in winter. We did not want polling during the monsoon either,” Mamata told her supporters at a public rally here in Hooghly district as part of her campaigning. “Elections during the Ramzan month will pose problem for the people of the minority community. We did not want it. But sometimes,we have to accept under compulsion when there is a court order,” she added.

She urged Muslims not to cast a single vote for the CPM,Congress and BJP,whom she accused of creating “hurdles” for the Muslims when they “would be praying and fasting”.

Ramzan is scheduled to begin from July 9-10 likely — the first phase of the five-phase poll begins from July 11.

Unlike the opposition parties, she said,Trinamool Congress “wanted the polls to be held and now it will be held”. “These parties are afraid of defeat in the elections. They did not want it to be held and delayed the poll process. The CPM,Congress and BJP have joined hands in a conspiracy to stall the elections. But their evil designs have been stalled,” she added.

Though the CPM,Congress and BJP had allied against her party, she said, they would be defeated and lose their political existence.
