A 24-year-old police aspirant, who had collapsed during the recruitment test here last week, died in hospital today following multi-organ failure.

Suresh Bhujal had come to Kolkata from Kalimpong to apply for the post of constable in Kolkata Police.

Suresh is not the only one to have succumbed after the test. On June 6,both he and Abhishek Pal collapsed during the 1,600-metre sprint. They were taken to SSKM hospital. Pal died that night.

Suresh was in better condition but was allegedly left without treatment that day. On Thursday, his condition deteriorated and he was shifted to the critical care unit. On Sunday,he was kept under ventilation and dialysis had to be done following renal failure. He died today at 5.45 am.

“He died of multi-organ failure and heat stroke,” said Dr T K Ghosh, the hospital super, brushing aside the allegation that he was left without treatment. “He was given the right treatment. He was also kept in the CCU and in ventilation when needed,” he said.

Suresh’s relatives refused to take his body this morning without a written assurance of jobs for at least two of his family members. “Senior police officials present there had said something about jobs but I was not in a mental state to bargain with them to put it in black and white,” said Suren Bhujal,Suresh’s elder brother, who was on the way to Kalimpong by road with Suresh’s body.

Lakho Bhutia, one of the aspirants, said the test was being carried out without any precautions. “There were no adequate arrangements for for water or a doctor at the venue. There was only an ambulance, which was used to rush him to the hospital,” he said.

After Suresh’s death, members of the Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) reached the hospital. “I had gone to Writers’ Buildings and demanded a written assurance of jobs for three of his family members but before I returned, the police had forced Suresh’s family members to leave with the body,” said Ratan Bahadur Budha,GJM president,Kolkata.

Suresh had quit studies while he was in BA second year because of a financial crunch in the family. His parents, one brother and two sisters were reportedly depending on him to help make ends meet.

“My brother never fought with anyone. On hearing the news, our mother has fallen sick,” said Suren Abhishek Pal’s father and sister met the chief minister today. Sources said Mamata Banerjee had assured that one member from each of their families would get a job.
