Xaviers plans year-long fest to mark 150 yrs

St Xaviers College in the city will mark its 150 years of existence with a year-long celebration that begins here on January 21,when Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee will attend the inaugural programme.

St Xaviers College in the city will mark its 150 years of existence with a year-long celebration that begins here on January 21,when Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee will attend the inaugural programme.

The programme will be the first in a series of events planned by the school,college and members of the alumni for every month of the celebration year,scheduled to be concluded on January 21,2010 by President Pratibha Patil.

The events leading up to the inauguration of the post-centennial golden jubilee festivities include the inauguration of the new building on the campus on January 16,followed by the opening of the new centralised library on the same day; and the Valedictory and Second Convocation on January 17,when External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee will be the chief guest.

The new building will accommodate non-teaching staff besides housing students of lesser means. The inauguration on the 21st will be followed by Xavotsav 2009,a three-day annual fest of the college that will start on January 23.

His thoughts for the year ahead and the 150th year of the college are personally that of gratitude to God,for his guidance and his providence,to the founder Jesuits and to the generations of staff and students,said Fr P C Mathew,S. J.,principal of St Xaviers College.
