A man died after he was crushed under the wheels of a car allegedly driven by his daughter’s boyfriend at Jajnagar near Bolpur in West Bengal’s Birbhum district, police said on Tuesday, adding that they have arrested the boyfriend and detained the woman.

According to the police, 50-year-old Kuddus Sheikh’s daughter Kutuba Khatoon (18) was in love with a man named Safikul Sheikh (23) alias Gaju Sheikh, also from Jajnagar. But Kuddus did not approve of their relationship and married her off to another man.

“Seven days after her marriage, the woman came to celebrate a ritual with her husband. She came in contact with Gaju. Gaju arrived at Kutuba’s house with a car. After that, the duo tried to escape in the car. It was at that time that the incident happened,” a police officer said.

It is alleged that Sheikh stood in front of the car when he saw the couple but they did not stop the vehicle. The incident took place on December 24.
