West Bengal might soon join Bangalore and other metros,with its first intra-state Volvo bus service expected to be launched by the end of this year.
The state transport department and the Volvo Buses India Private Ltd have been operating Volvo 8400 low-floor city buses on a trial basis on three routes Salt Lake to Tollygunge,Salt Lake to Joka and Airport to BBD Bagh.
Under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) scheme of the Central government,the Centre will provide funds for purchasing buses in 63 cities across the country.
Under JNNURM,we are hoping to extend our services to eight new cities by this year end. We have been doing a trial run on three routes. The response has been good. We are engaged in discussions with the state transport department to introduce intra-city service through private public partnerships, said Akash Passey,Volvo Buses India Pvt Ltd.
Bengal already has 15 inter-state Volvo buses .
