Fifteen-year-old Sangeeta Baura of Lagda village of Purulia once overheard their parents talking about her marriage. A student of class VI of Lagda Girls High School, who earlier studied in a primary school under welfare programme of the state government, revolted.

So did two fourteen-year olds Gayatri Rajua and Bobby Rajua 14,who also were from the same village and studied in class V.

They then plead with their parents not to go ahead with their plans of marrying them off. But when their tears and wails failed to cut any ice, they took it up with Prasenjit Kundu, the assistant labour commissioner, whom they knew, and told him about their parents’ plans. Kundu turned out to be Godsend for the girls as he met their parents. The officer not only convinced their parents’ to put off their plan but also arranged special grants for the girl’s study from the local administration.
