Mamata seeks EC intervention, says CPM losing cool
The Trinamool Congress candidate from Ghatal in West Midnapore district was assaulted during poll campaign on Wednesday by some people allegedly belonging to the CPM.
The attack on Shankar Dolui follows the killing of a Trinamool leader in Jamuria in Burdwan earlier this week.
Official sources said Dolui, who was beaten up with sticks and suffered multiple injuries, has been admitted to a local hospital.
Trinamool MP Suvendu Adhikari, who reached Ghatal, said arrangements were being made to shift Dolui to a hospital in Kolkata.
Sources said that a local CPM leader,Mritunjay Chakraborty has been detained in connection with the attack.
Trinamool party workers have alleged that Chakraborty led a mob of CPM supporters which suddenly started beating up Dolui with sticks as he was talking to people in front of Sultanpur gram panchayat office.
A report about the incident has been sent to the Election Commission, sources said.
The district CPM unit, however, denied involvement in the incident and attributed it to Trinamool infighting.
In Kolkata,Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee sought intervention of the Election Commission saying there has been a sudden spurt in violence at the behest of the CPM.
Our candidates and those of the Congress are being attacked by CPM armed cadres in collusion with the police, said Banerjee. Stating that a EC team is likely to visit the state either on April 10 or 11 to review the situation,Banerjee said peace should be maintained and violence stopped.
We totally depend on the EC. We believe that the EC will take appropriate action so that we can go ahead with our election schedule peacefully.
Alleging that Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacherjee and CPM leaders were instigating the violence, she said: The CPM has lost its balance knowing fully well they will be out of power in the elections.
Banerjee, who returned from Jamuria in Burdwan district, alleged that the Congress candidate in Keshpur in West Midnapore district was also attacked and brutally beaten up by CPM men.
