According to the Indian Meteorological Department, the minimum and maximum temperature were recorded as 25 °C and 34°C, respectively.
In a report, the IMD stated that light to moderate rainfall with thunder is likely over the next two to three days.
“Kolkata can witness 001.2 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours with maximum and minimum relative humidity (R.H) to be around 82 % and 30 %,” it added. Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) deputy director Sanjib
Bandyopadhyay said, “As per reports, West Bengal is likely to witness rainfall on April 23-25. The heatwave was prevailing due to the dominance of the northwesterly winds. The sudden dip in temperature was because of a plunge of the dominance of these winds. We have observed a cyclonic circulation over central Uttar Pradesh that is bringing a moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal. Lastly, the westerly trap – which is moving from the west to east – is resulting in conditions that are favourable for a thunderstorm.”
“On Saturday, western parts and coastal regions of Bengal witnessed thunderstorms that ripped through places, destroying and devastating houses. We expect the spread of thunderstorms to increase on Sunday. The thunderstorms are likely in Bankura, Purulia and West Burdwan districts. The temperature in many places has dropped down by more than 5 degrees and the sky will remain partly cloudy. Thunderstorms are likely on April 23, 24 and to some extent on April 25,” he added.
