Stephen Court fire: Forensic dept starts analysis after nine days

Nine days after the devastating fire engulfed the Stephen Court building, the State Forensic Department today started the analysis of the samples collected from the spot.

Nine days after the devastating fire engulfed the Stephen Court building, the State Forensic Department today started the analysis of the samples collected from the spot.

Even as the state government had pressurised all the departments to act fast in this case, the forensic department — which was supposed to submit its report within a week after the incident — started investigation process today only.

“Time was spent in collecting samples. We did not waste time. We had to visit the building twice as collecting samples from the fire-ravaged building was a difficult task. We will take a few more days to prepare the forensic report,” said Dhurjati Sengupta,Director,Forensic Department.

Meanwhile,Detective Department (DD) of Kolkata Police is facing several problems due to non-availability of the report.

“We have learnt that today the forensic department has started analysis. We have to wait for 10 more days to get the reports. As of now,we are carrying out the investigation work without knowing the actual cause of the fire,” said a senior officer of the DD.

“We have asked for several documents, including the names of the assessees of the building and the papers regarding the court cases. But the Kolkata Municipal Corporation has submitted two plans only,” added the official.

However,Mayor Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya said: “We have not received any official communication from the DD asking for the documents. They earlier asked for the plans which we have already submitted.”
