Reputed economist Sugata Marjit stepped down from the post of the chairman of State Higher Education Council, citing other professional commitments. I had informed Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of my decision before I put in my papers, he said at a press conference,in the presence of Education Minister Bratya Basu. Vice chairman of the council,Abhijit Chakrabarty will succeed Marjit. Marjit brushed aside speculations that there was a difference in opinion between him and the state government. Let me make it clear that my resignation is not because of any difference with the state or the minister. I am always ready to help in my own capacity. I am resigning because I want to devote more time to studying and research, he said. Marjit said that when he was appointed the chairman,he did not have an idea about what his responsibilities would entail. I have been working with a lot of freedom and I am thankful to the Chief Minister and the education minister for that, he said. Basu said that Marjits resignation has been accepted.
