The Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Saturday hit out at BJP national general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya for allegedly making a derogatory remark against women, claiming that “this openly sexist statement reveals low mentality of the party”.

The senior BJP leader has courted controversy after saying that women who wear “dirty clothes look like Surpanakha”, a female demon from the epic Ramayana.

“When I go out at night and see young people intoxicated, I feel like giving them five-seven (slaps) to sober them up. And girls wear such dirty clothes. We think of women as goddesses… there’s no trace of that in them. They look like Surpanakha. God has given you a good body, wear nice clothes. Please teach your children well, I am very worried,” Vijayvargiya, who was previously BJP’s central observer for West Bengal, reportedly said at a religious programme in Indore on Thursday.

TMC’s Rajya Sabha MP Jawhar Sircar said, “This openly sexist remark reveals the low mentality of the party. Just look at him and judge whether you are safe.”

The TMC in its official twitter handle said, “India continues to walk BACKWARDS under the leadership of PM @narendramodi. Senior @BJP4India leaders are now comparing women to demonesses for simply choosing to wear what they please! Wish Mr @KailashOnline would chide his son too, for his behaviour.”

State minister and senior party leader Shashi Panja said, “It is a reflection of the BJP leader’s poor mentality. We want to know whether the country will progress or go backwards. Those who speak about Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao are talking about what a woman should wear. We strongly condemn this statement made against women of the country.”

There was no immediate response from the BJP on this issue.
