Seven IRB jawans suspended for ‘starting revolt’ in Shilda

Nearly a month after jawans of India Reserve Battalion 1,a state para-military force, protested against poor living conditions at their Shilda camp in West Midnapore district

Nearly a month after jawans of India Reserve Battalion 1,a state para-military force, protested against poor living conditions at their Shilda camp in West Midnapore district and a service rule that forced them to stay in Junglemahal, the government on Thursday suspended seven of the 20 personnel who allegedly started the stir.

The 20 jawans were earlier asked to appear before commanding officer Kalyan Kumar Mullick at the force’s headquarters in Durgapur. More suspensions may follow as the authorities are yet to complete inquiries against all of them,Mullick said.

“Discipline in a force can not be compromised at any cost. They broke all rules and that cannot be tolerated,” Mullick told The Indian Express from Durgapur over the phone.

Out of 58 jawans and two ASIs posted at Shilda when the unrest took place, the authorities identified 20 on the basis of video clippings and newspaper cuttings of the incident. Mullick, who was not allowed to enter the camp by the rebellious jawans, also identified those who led the revolt and argued with him vehemently.

“The seven who were suspended were the ones who blocked the entry of Mullick and who gave interviews to TV channels with masks,” said an official.

After the incident, the contingent was shifted to its headquarters in Durgapur and personnel of Straco, another armed police force, were posted there.

Poor living conditions at the camp and a service rule that compelled them to remain in Junglemahal for the last nine years forced the jawans to rise in near revolt.

Worried over the turn of events,Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had sent the then DG of Armed Police,Gautam Mohan Chakrabarti,to quell the revolt.

A few days after his visit, the government removed Chakrabarti from the post for his alleged soft stand.
