Security stepped up in six sensitive districts

Following communal clashes in Deganga in North 24 Parganas district which rocked the state recently,the state police have taken special precautionary measures ahead of the Ayodhya verdict on Friday.

The intelligence reports sent to the state Home department have revealed prevalence of tension in some areas of the six districts declared communally sensitive.

According to police,the districts declared sensitive include South 24 Paraganas,North 24 Parganas,Malda,Murshidabad,Nadia and North Dinajpur.

Surajeet Kar Purakayastha,IG,Law and Order,said intelligence inputs will be collected at a grass-root level so that seriousness of the situation can be assessed.

“Special police forces led by senior police officers will be deployed at crowded places and highly sensitive areas. Special police patrolling has been arranged near religious places,” he said.

A senior police official said,“We will try to keep political functionaries away from the trouble-prone areas since provocations often come from political parties. We have to take special care of Deganga as the place witnessed communal tension a few days ago.”

Siddhinath Gupta,DIG,Presidency Range,said though the situation in Deganga was brought under control after the Army stepped in,tension still prevails in the area. A slight provocation can lead to a major violence in the area,he said.

“We have set out up our camp in the area and several senior officials have been deployed in the area,” said Gupta. Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee has asked her party leaders to keep vigil in view of the Allahabad High Court verdict in Ayodhya land title suits on Friday. Banerjee met all front-ranking leaders of the party in the evening on Wednesday and discussed the issue.

Later,emerging from the meeting,Banerjee appealed to the people of the state to maintain peace and harmony. She said the verdict should be respected by all political parties as tolerance can only retain the secular fabric of the country.

“I have all respect for the verdict of the court in the case. If any one is unhappy with the verdict,he may move the Supreme Court,” she said.

She said,maintaining law and order is state government concern,but people should stand for harmony and integrity of the country.

“I would appeal to the people of Bengal to come forward in maintaining harmony. We should not forget that Bengal has shown the path in the past,” Banerjee said.She said according to her scheduled programme,she will be in Kolkata at the time of verdict and will address a rally in Singur on Saturday.
