State Law Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya hit out at BJP state president Rahul Sinha for “insulting” women through his “brothel” remark at the party’s ‘Nari Samman Yatra’ which culminated in Shyambazar on Wednesday.

“Sinha has insulted the women of Bengal, we strongly condemn his remark. One can ask whether he could be considered a human being. I don’t know if his mother is alive but if she is, she must be ashamed of him after what he had said yesterday,” Bhattacharya said and demanded Sinha to “apologise in public”.

“This is not how a political battle is fought,” she said.

The law minister’s scathing reaction is in response to Sinha’s purported remark where he reportedly asked Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee if “she intend(s) to turn the state into a brothel”. The CM’s answer to cases of rape is a monetary compensation of Rs 20,000. It is an insult to offer money to a victim of rape and not give her justice,” Sinha had said in his address to the gathering, and then asked, “Does she (Mamata) intend to turn the state into a brothel?”

On Thursday, the BJP leader, speaking to this correspondent, said he stands by his comment, while accusing the ruling party of “giving shelter to rapists”.

“The chief minister has never come out strongly against any rapist. The Park Street rape accused is still at large. So is the main accused in Kamduni rape and murder even after over two years. Also, in the Ranaghat nun rape case, the CM kept quiet, giving enough time for the rapists to escape to Bangladesh. I stick to what I have said (at the Nari Samman Yatra rally on Wednesday),” he said.

He then pointed out that the BJP has been “courteous” towards the CM and the womenfolk in the state that the party has not “burnt her (Mamata’s) effigy” despite the state witnessing so many incidents of violence against women.

The law minister, meanwhile, said that the TMC’s women wing will take out a rally in protest against Sinha’s speech on Friday from College Square.
