Ragpicker injured in blast in central Kolkata

The blast occurred near the busy Blochmann Street and SN Banerjee Road crossing in central Kolkata.

A ragpicker got injured after a blast occurred while he was checking the contents of a discarded plastic gunny bag in central Kolkata on Saturday.

The victim, identified as Bapi Das, 58, was admitted to the NRS Hospital for treatment. His right wrist suffered the maximum impact of the blast.

The local Taltala Police Station said they received news of the blast at 1.45 pm.

The police added that the plastic bag was found at the Blochmann Street and SN Banerjee Road crossing.

“The area has been cordoned off and the Bomb Disposal and Detection Squad (BDDS) has been called in. Accordingly, BDDS personnel reached the spot, and checked the bag. After their clearance, traffic was allowed on the stretch again,” said a police officer.

He added that the injured person was from Ichapur and started living on the footpath of SN Banerjee Road recently.

“The statement of the victim has not been recorded as he needs some time. A forensic team is likely to examine the case. The cause of the blast is not known yet,” the police officer concluded.
