The Presidency University alumni association has decided to send a letter to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee urging her to make the College Street area a no-procession zone.
Condemning the vandalism at the campus on April 10,Bibhas Chowdhury, director of Indian Statistical Service and secretary of the alumni association, said,We have taken a unanimous decision to make the College Street area a no-procession zone as processions of political parties are hampering studies. There are several academic institutes in the College Street area.
Several alumni had similar views. Anindya Mitra, former advocate general of West Bengal and an alumnus, said the administration should be prompt in arresting the accused. This is the first time that such vandalism has been done by outsiders inside the campus,he added.
Somnath Chatterjee, former Lok Sabha speaker, said the vandalism had been engineered by those who had vested interests, and lapses on the part of police had resulted in such a crisis.
Physicist Ashok Sen said,The need of the hour is to organise counselling sessions in the university to build confidence among students and teachers who have witnessed the vandalism.
Bimal Jalan, former governor of the RBI,said the administration should have to be more proactive to stop vandalism inside the campus.
