In protest against the newly proposed ordinance from the Education ministry, the students affiliated to Independent Consolidation (IC) on Tuesday staged a sit-in demonstration outside the office of the Vice-Chancellor of the Presidency University.

The newly proposed ordinance, which was ratified by the state Governor on November 3,claims to “depoliticise education”. Some of the student bodies, including IC,have slammed it as “undemocratic” and “repressive”. The student members of the Independent Consolidation, who are against the proposed new ordinance, after holding a General Body Meeting at 1 pm,staged a two-hour sit-in demonstration outside the V-C’s office at 2 pm.

During the demonstration,V-C Malobika Sarkar met the protesting students and promised them to look into their demands. She also assured them that she would get in touch with higher officials and respond by Friday. However, the students were not satisfied with what they called a “symbolic assurance” and called a General Assembly meeting for students from all political shades,on Thursday.

Under the terms of the proposed ordinance, scholars affiliated to a political party would not be eligible to apply for the post of the V-C. Besides,a search committee comprising the chancellor’s nominee,UGC representative and a reputed scholar would short-list three names, out of which one would be selected by the chancellor. Under the ordinance, there would be no room for students,non-teaching staff and university alumni in the reconstituted bodies.

“We have asked her to look into the formation of the EC,but nothing has come out of it. And now this ordinance which claims to depoliticise education has come,: said a student.
