North Bengal floods: BJP accuses Mamata of insensitivity for attending Durga Puja Carnival instead of visiting affected districts

After incessant rain left several dead and destroyed many houses in West Bengal’s Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, and Siliguri districts on Saturday night, the Opposition BJP has accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of insensitivity, arguing that instead of attending the Durga Puja Carnival on Kolkata’s Red Road on Sunday evening, she should have visited the flood-hit districts. Banerjee has said she will visit them on Monday.

“In the past 14 years, there has not been any change in the drainage system of North Bengal. There can be incessant rain, water can come from Bhutan, but going by the way several districts were flooded, it is clear that the municipalities led by the Government are incompetent. Today is not a happy day. Our CM, Mamata Banerjee, should have reached North Bengal today itself. But we see that she will participate in the Durga Puja carnival. In these difficult times, there was no need for the carnival,” said BJP state president Shamik Bhattacharya, who said he would leave for North Bengal on Monday morning.

At a press conference, Bhattacharya further stated that BJP MP Biplab Deb had spoken to the Sikkim chief minister regarding the safe return of tourists from West Bengal and Tripura who were stranded there. Read more
