Trinamool Congress MP from Barrackpore Arjun Singh’s nephew was arrested in connection with the murder of a party worker in Jagaddal in North 24 Parganas, police said on Thursday.
According to police, the MP’s nephew Sanjit Singh alias Pappu was arrested in alleged connection in Vicky Yadav’s murder. Police said he was called for an interrogation in an attempt to murder case and was later arrested.
Pappu’s lawyer Rakesh Singh alleged that the arrest was illegal and that his client had no involvement in the killing.
On November 21, Vicky was shot dead near his house. Eyewitnesses said Vicky was standing in front of his house late Tuesday evening when three persons on a motorcycle came and asked his name. As soon as Vicky told them his name, they shot at him eight to nine times at point blank range. Vicky collapsed on the spot, they added. The attackers managed to flee.
Vicky was first rushed to Bhatpara State General Hospital and then to a private hospital in Kolkata. However, the doctors declared him brought dead.
“So far, six people have been arrested in the case. Prima facie, the motive for the murder appears to be personal enmity,” said a police officer.
Local sources said Vicky’s name had featured among the names of accused who were allegedly involved in vandalising homes of BJP workers in the area during the 2021 Assembly election.
They said he was reportedly close to TMC MP from Barrackpore Arjun Singh’s son Pawan.
