The minimum temperature in Kolkata and its adjoining areas rose by 5 degrees Celsius on Tuesday night even as the sky remained overcast with occasional drizzle. Meteorologists said the rise in night temperature was due to an overcast sky — an indirect effect of Cyclone Michaung that made landfall on the coasts of Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday.
On Tuesday, the maximum temperature was 26.1 degrees C, 2 degrees below normal; while the minimum temperature stood at 22.5 degrees C, 6 degrees above normal. The relative humidity was 85 per cent.
As per the Met Department, light to moderate rain will take place over south Bengal till Friday.
“Light to moderate rain is expected in the districts of South Bengal on Thursday and Friday. There is no other warning for the state. As the cyclone weakens towards the north after landfall on Tuesday, cloud cover will increase in the sky of south Bengal. As a result, the maximum temperature would decrease while the minimum temperature increase,” said Sanjeev Banerjee, Eastern Regional Director of Alipore Meteorological Department.
Winds will start blowing from Thursday and the minimum temperature will gradually drop to normal and below. We can expect the mercury to drop slowly from December 8, he added.
Speaking about rains in December, weather officials said that it was not uncommon in December. “We get rain in December from Western Disturbances. The rain we are talking about Wednesday and Thursday is due to the influence of the cyclone,” the official said.
