At a time when the BJP-led government at the Centre is facing protests over “rising intolerance”, the ruling Trinamool Congress in West Bengal faced embarrassment when party MP Moon Moon Sen gave Prime Minister Narendra Modi a clean chit saying he has done a “good job” and should be given “a chance” before being judged. The ruling party in West Bengal, however, distanced itself from the comments saying it was Bankura MP’s personal view. “The statement made by my colleague Moon Moon Sen is certainly not the view of the party,” party spokesperson Derek O’Brien said in a tweet Wednesday. Earlier on Tuesday, Sen, the Bankura MP, on the sidelines of an event, had said, “I think we should give him (Prime Minister Modi) a chance. He has done a good job winning all those votes and we have to give him a chance as a Prime Minister. His own party is not giving him a chance. Let’s see what he does in five years and then we can go against him.” [related-post] Asked the protests against intolerance across the nation, she had said that intolerance had always been there and are being highlighted more now. “We have more cameras today, more microphones. So the exposure is more. But wasn’t child marriage always there? Protesters have been able to unite because of the computer, the internet and the media. There is nothing new in protesting,” she had said. Reacting to Sen’s comments, some Opposition parties said Sen, being inexperienced in active politics, had only leaked inside info of the party which was hand-in-glove with the BJP, while others said it was all a fixed match and she had said so under the instruction of TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee. Talking to The Indian Express, Sen clarified that her quotes had been misinterpreted. “They kept on asking me political questions till I said that Modi had done a good job winning all the seats. I never praised any of his work. If my quotes have offended my party, they have all the right to be angry at me,” Sen said.
